I think getting better at an instrument is a lot of fun, and I think teaching guitar is a lot of fun. I love what I do and I’m very grateful that I get to say that.
I have been teaching guitar in the Boston area since 1998 and teaching has been my full time job since 2002. I have taught over 15,000 classes to hundreds of different students: children, adult beginners, and many advanced players who have recorded albums and performed across the country.
In addition to my testimonials, I have plenty of references available; many happy guitarists, kids, and parents, so feel free to ask.
Over the years I’ve been involved in many different musical projects. I’ve enjoyed being an accompanist to singer-songwriters, playing in rock bands, playing jazz gigs, writing and arranging music, and more recently putting on entirely improvised solo guitar performances.
If you'd like to hear me play, you can follow my instagram channel where I post short clips of things I might be working on. (While I post music there that is in a very specific style of guitar, I teach more general guitar playing to my students here in Jamaica Plain: folk, rock, blues, popular songs, etc.)
I have studied the guitar with Tim Miller, Steve Rochinski, and Bruce Bartlett, among others. I was awarded scholarships at both New England Conservatory and Berklee College of Music, but did not attend either school and instead chose to focus on studying privately with teachers of my choice as well as honing my own craft as a teacher.
Skuli Thorsteinsson was carefully selected as a new addition to the studio here in Jamaica Plain, and is currently assisting and teaching some of the children's group classes. Skuli is not only a versatile and highly skilled musician, but a terrific communicator with a thorough understanding of the challenges that come up when trying to keep kids motivated and enthused about guitar.
Skuli is a graduate of Berklee College of Music, has been teaching guitar professionally since 2009 and regularly performs in the Boston Area. Coincidentally, Skuli has also studied guitar with Tim Miller and Bruce Bartlett, among many others teachers.
Skuli also has been the guitarist for a wide variety of bands including Beantown Swing Orchestra, Chicken Slacks, and The Hub. He has performed with musicians such as Nigel Hall (Lettuce), Nikki Glaspie (Beyonce, Dumpstafunk), Timo Shanko (G. Love and Special Sauce), and Oscar Stagnaro (Paquito D’Rivera.) Sk
